“Cybersecurity Contract Requirements & Controls” was the topic of a sold-out, day-long conference held by National Defense Industrial Association’s New England Chapter in mid-May.

Federal prime- and sub-contractors from the New England region gathered at Raytheon Company’s Integrated Defense Systems headquarters in Tewksbury, MA, to get practical guidance needed to ensure and prepare for the security of government data throughout the defense industrial base supply chain.

The program featured keynote speaker Marianne Bailey, Principal Director, Deputy CIO for Cybersecurity, DoD CIO, and many other government and industry experts, including Peter Kim, the U.S. Air Force Chief Information Security Office.

Sessions were devoted to the new FAR and DFARS regulations; implications of cybersecurity on controlled data rules; how prime contractors are addressing new DFARS and FAR rules and how they will flow them down to and monitor compliance by the subs; how small business subcontractors are dealing with the new requirements; recognizing the distinction between security and compliance, and examining the role of vendors and lawyers in assuring a company’s reputation and data are secure; and managing cyber-defensive technology.

“Cybersecurity is a major concern for businesses of all sizes,” said NDIA/New England President Clarke Orzalli. “We knew that going in, but the success of this conference demonstrates that there is much more that NDIA/New England can do to educate and support the region’s defense contractors.”
